Joshiah Dwight Ashley (1804-1871)
Joshiah Dwight Ashley (Eli, Joseph, James, Joseph, David, Robert), born 1 November 1804 in Westfield, Mass.; died 25 January 1871 in Westfield ; married 21 May 1846 in Westfield, Maria Dewey, daughter of James and Lydia (Hisscock) Dewey, born 10 August 1808 in Westfield; died 27 March 1888 in Westfield.
Josiah Dwight Ashley settled in his native place. He contracted for and built a section of the New Haven and Northampton Railroad near Westfield. He was not engaged actively in any business, however. His wife was a woman of means, which, with his own property, enabled him to live leisurely. He sold the place which had been his father's, and bought a brick house on Franklin Street, where he carried on farming on a small scale and passed the remainder of his life.
